As defined by The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, the word “sonder” means:
“the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own — populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries, and inherited craziness — an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk”
“Sondersongs” is the first album in four years by Whale Fall, was released on June 26th, 2018 and it continues to evolve from its predecessor “The Madrean”.
Whale Fall returns with a phenomenal album, who I think has a more mature sound and composition, and musically, I found an evolution compared to their other albums.
“Whale Fall” and “The Madrean” were too good, but “Sondersongs” it’s in another level, definitely as a band they grew up and have shown us that, by delivering such an ecliptic and phenomenal album.
I can say, they keep the style from previous records but worked and improved a new vibe, they worked on their sound without exhausting it and the result speaks for itself.
The atmosphere, the ambiance, the composition, are magnificent, no need for words to describe what it feels like to listen to this, I guess it’s my favorite album of 2018 so far.
Talking about the songs, “El Llanto en Llamas” is one of the best songs on the album, short but ridiculously good; “Reservoirs” and “The Sondersongs” are such breathtaking pieces, an impressive display of ability by these guys, hats off to them.
Congratulations to Whale Fall for making one of the best albums of 2018, they never disappoint.
